Understanding the Six Sigma Green Belt Body of Knowledge

Do you want to become an Asq Certified Six Sigma Green Belt? These certifications are becoming more common among companies that use Six Sigma as a method of management. Before you get started in becoming an Asq Green Belt, it helps to understand the different levels of Six Sigma Certification. There are four levels from which to choose when you begin your training. These levels are:

Green Belt – The first level of Six Sigma Green Belt training focuses on the core requirements of Six Sigma and introduces students to the tools and processes of the methodology. This level focuses on conceptualizing the problems, modeling the solutions, managing change, and learning about Six Sigma. A six sigma green belt student is likely not to be an expert in every area of Six Sigma, but will have a firm grasp on most of the main areas. This certification will be very useful for project managers who need to effectively manage Six Sigma projects.

Black Belt – The second level of Six Sigma green belt training emphasizes developing the basic skills necessary for the job. The black belt certification emphasizes the full package of knowledge that comes with the certification, not just the core material covered during the first two stages of the program. A black belt six sigma green belt learner takes on more responsibilities and is given more responsibilities. The role of a black belt is much more than simply implementing the Six Sigma methodology in the workplace. They will also be expected to learn how to properly manage Six Sigma projects from start to finish.

Master Black Belt – The third level of Six Sigma Green Belt training teaches the student everything that they have already learned but hasn’t actually applied in the real world. Once the student has become a black belt, they are typically given additional project management responsibilities and can move on to become full-fledged Six Sigma leaders. This level of Six Sigma certification emphasizes the more practical side of Six Sigma. Master black belts will often work with their instructors to create courses that include real-life case study scenarios.

Intermediate – The fourth and final stage of Six Sigma certification involves both learning the conceptual as well as the application of the Six Sigma methodology. This level of training completes the process of solidifying the candidate’s understanding of the black belt in Six Sigma methodology. The candidates then are able to develop projects based on the methodology and meet project goals within reasonable timeframes. This level of Six Sigma Green Belt training requires that the candidates understand and are able to demonstrate the concepts of Six Sigma, but it does not require them to have extensive project experience. It is for people who are seeking certification but who are not ready to jump into the deep end of the Six Sigma pool right away.

As previously mentioned, the black belt certification comes with an additional benefit. Six Sigma Black Belts are allowed to take on the responsibility of mentoring other Six Sigma Black Belts. They also are allowed to take on independent project responsibilities as a leader. This gives the Six Sigma practitioner an opportunity to build upon their own foundation of training while still contributing to the larger framework of the methodology.

There are two different levels of Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. The first level of certification is obtainable through specialized training providers. The second level is accomplished by attending online or offline Six Sigma courses. Either method, however, provides a solid foundation of knowledge about the basics of Six Sigma and demonstrates the willingness and ability to apply those concepts in real-world projects.

The Six Sigma Green Belt certification is most valuable for those already in the field of Six Sigma. Those who may be considering a career change should definitely obtain at least one Six Sigma Green Belt certification to demonstrate their worth. It’s not just for beginners anymore! Now it’s also for masters and even PhD students.
