Reviewing the Third Edition Certification of the Certified Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook

The third edition of the Certified Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook is now available in print and eBook. The book is chock full of new content that focuses on topics most relevant to the challenges of having a Six Sigma implementation in your organization. It also has a lot of practical “handbook” examples that you can look at and get a feel for the topics.

The new text has been upgraded to reflect changes in the labor market and economic climates more recently. In the labor market, there are more individual job seekers and there is a resulting tighter competition for jobs. In addition, companies are competing for the best talent by offering the best salaries and perks. With this in mind, the last few years have seen the lowest amount of job creation since the Great Depression. This is the result of the global recession and the resulting loss of manufacturing jobs and the corresponding increase in outsourcing to other countries.

Now let’s take a look at the different topics covered in the updated CISS Handbook. The first topic is process improvement. In the CISS definition, process improvement is “the improvement of an existing process, product, or service in order to improve the quality, yield, output, and/or service.” A successful process improvement program is one that improves a process over time while reducing waste. A clear example of this would be reducing the number of rejected orders that come from bad quality products or services.

Another important area covered is change management. This includes the improvement of the internal control measures for a company, processes, and systems that help ensure “business governance, operations, maintenance, and financial procedures and policies.” As you can see, the focus of this chapter is the internal control measures that are used by the management of a company.

The Six Sigma black belt handbook also has a great deal of marketing information. There are detailed discussions about benchmarking, surveys, case studies, and the like. The marketing section includes an entire chapter that looks at ways to market a Six Sigma program. It starts off with a review of the “Six Sigma Basics”, then goes on to discuss the benefits of using Six Sigma, with an emphasis on using the black belt certification for recruiting new employees and motivating them. There are also some great recommendations on getting the word out about the black belt certification.

A third main topic that is covered is the use of training and development. This is an area that has been receiving a lot of attention lately, as companies struggle to find the most cost effective ways to train their employees. However, there is still quite a bit of debate as to what the best method for training should be. The Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook looks at the importance of continual training and development in a positive light.

The third chapter looks at the concepts and basics associated with Six Sigma, with a particular emphasis on quality improvement. This area is one of the fastest growing within the larger organization, and companies are constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of the processes within their own organizations. The Black Belt Handbook explains the concept well and provides examples of how Six Sigma techniques can be applied in practically any type of business or industry. It is easy to read and informative to read, with detailed discussions on the matter at every step. It is definitely a must-have book for everyone who works in an organization that needs to implement this type of improvement.

One of the most interesting topics that is covered in the Six Sigma black belt handbook is the concept of Quality Control. Six Sigma is often compared to the United States military in that they are both “quality focused” and dedicated to controlling quality as much as possible. The United States military conducts extensive quality control throughout all phases of the production process. The certified Six Sigma black belt handbook explains that this is an important issue to not only the defense department, but also for the manufacturing sector as a whole. Any organization that is considering improving their processes needs to take into consideration quality control.
