Lean Six Sigma Certification and Reliability – Why Is This Important?

I’m sure all the Lean Six Sigma Black Belts out there are taking heart in Kolkata. This is a destination for all those who are looking for a little orientation on this methodology. In fact, it’s a veritable ‘mecca’ for those in the do-it-yourself training niche. And why should one look for training in this town? Well, for starters, it’s got the best food – or should I say “gourmet” – in the entire country.

In the last couple of years, Kolkata has literally been transformed from a poor man’s junk into the most technologically advanced town in India. This transformation was largely a product of sheer necessity: for starters, there was a severe shortage of skilled manpower that had to be addressed. The logic was that if the infrastructure was developed, more jobs would be created. It also made sense because the entire city of Kolkata is dotted with highly developed towns and cities. Secondly, there was little scope for manual labour because the whole operation was computerized.

I’ll give you a hint as to what lies ahead for your Lean Six Sigma Certification Course in Kolkata. There will be plenty of case studies and lab sessions to enhance your understanding of the subject. You’ll have to write a significant number of papers on the theoretical aspects and also on practical applications. To get your paper published, you’re going to need some time in the classroom, and it’s likely you’ll have to hit the internet for some additional assignments.

When I was getting ready to take my first Lean Six Sigma Training course in Kolkata, I followed the same routine that I followed when I took up any new job. I read the instruction manuals, studied the supporting documents, asked a lot of questions on the internet, and then tried to find the answers in the literature. While this strategy worked for me in the past, it was not a very efficient approach in this case. I soon discovered that the most effective way to learn the subject matter is to speak to real people who are implementing Six Sigma in Kolkata or have been trained in doing so. I needed people to tell me about their experiences.

My colleagues and I were fortunate to find such people in our city. One such person was Nitin Bajaj, who is now the director of operations at a consultancy firm in New Delhi. He took us aside one day and explained to us the importance of having a Six Sigma trained practitioner leading us through the process. His experience made it possible for him to show us exactly how the processes needed to be implemented and managed.

We related the literature we read on Lean Six Sigma to his instructions, which he then told us he was going to teach us at his consultancy. When we got together, he told us that he wanted to share the knowledge he had with us in a classroom-type environment. He explained that he could not do this because of some legal issues, which prevented him from taking the course out of India. Since we were based in Kolkata, he felt it would be better for him to take the certification course online.

We started the certification course immediately and were delighted to see that the methodology we had been taught had really been helpful. Nitin led us through the basic procedures, explaining why each is relevant to specific situations. We spent a lot of time familiarizing ourselves with the processes and seeing how they would impact our own projects. As a result, we had a complete understanding of the related literature. The course was taught in a very hands-on manner, with a lot of questions being asked by the instructor. This made it easy for us to understand what the course was all about and how it related to our own situation.

The course, although still ongoing, has helped us keep up to date with the latest developments in the field of certification. It has also inspired us to take up certification ourselves, in our own respective fields of expertise. This has given us a good understanding of what is involved in this process and what the requirements are. In the future, if we thought certification was not relevant, we could have continued on with the training, but for now, we know that it is.
